Kerala is known for its temple festivals. Many of the temples have unique traditions and most hold festivals on specific days of the year called poorams / utsavams/ vela, which showcases many of its old art forms. During the poorams, idol of the God is taken out on a procession around the countryside atop an elephant. Most pooram festivals have at least one ornately decorated elephant being paraded in the procession taken out of the temple precincts. Majority of these happen during Jan- April and during Aug September festivities related to Onam festival takes place.
